Phi Theta Kappa plans rock ‘n roll event

As part of Phi Theta Kappa, our members are involved in an honor study topic and an international service project. This year, our current honor study topic is “Popular Culture: Shaping and Reflecting Who We Are.”

For the international service project, “Conquering Cancer, Continuing the Fight,” we have teamed up with the American Cancer Society. In our attempt to gain more knowledge of popular culture and to help the American Cancer Society, we have planned an event that we think, and hope, will be grand.

Alpha Zeta Eta will be having a 1950’s Jubilee on Nov. 19 from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. All proceeds from the event will benefit the 2006 American Cancer Society’s “Relay for Life,” which kicked off last Thursday, Oct. 20, at North Lake, and is scheduled to take place in spring 2006. The annual event is an all-night affair where team members take turns walking in a marathon. Prior to and during the relay each team collects money for the ACS.

Next month’s Jubilee will encompass everything related to the 1950s, from the art, to the clothes, to the cars they drove. We will transform the cafeteria, patio and courtyard to the fabulous Fifties. This fun family event will have several contests, games and, of course, plenty of food, drinks and vendors.

Some of the highlights of the event will include an art show, American Bandstand talent show, and a classic car show. We will end the event with a 1950s sock hop where we will twist away to music of that time. We will pre-sell tickets to the Sock Hop for $5.

Enjoying all the family fun activities at the Jubilee is great, but at the same time, it will be a great opportunity to get a headstart in raising money for your Relay for Life team. We will provide tables to sell merchandise to raise funds. All that is required is to follow the theme of the 1950s with your dress and the decorations on your table. So, what if you don’t have a team but still want to raise money for your club? You can still have a table, for a fee of $25, and then you can keep the money you earn.

I hope everyone will join us on Nov. 19 for this wonderful look back into a period of American history. For those who need S.E.A credits or just volunteer opportunities, this is a great way to gain those, help raise money and awareness for a wonderful cause, and have fun in the process.

For more information about the Jubilee and how to form your Relay for Life team, contact our AVP of Service Vicki Riley at vicki.riley@ptk.org or come to our meetings on Fridays at 4:30 p.m., in room A-206.
