MySpace is your space

Tom Anderson started a Web portal called MySpace
less than three years ago. The site has already
out-clicked media giants AOL, eBay and Google,
according to comScore, which tabulated MySpace’s
October page views at 11.5 billion.
MySpace is the insanely popular lifestyle and
networking portal with strong promotional capacities
for bands. Acts as big as R.E.M. and as small
as that guy down at the coffeehouse use MySpace
to gain exposure.
MySpace’s 40 million users create personal
pages. They can invite new or existing users to
be their “friends.” Members can join
groups, post photos, create a blog, or designate
schools they’ve attended. Some find long-
lost pals. Revealing personal information is discouraged
in the usage agreement.
Nearly 700 current North Lake students and 200
alumni mention the school on their personal pages.
Anderson is onto something, and someone is on
to him. News Corp. acquired MySpace’s parent
company last summer, buying a portfolio that included
30 other sites at a cost of $580 million.
Anderson seems intent to quell the concerns of
his online community. News of the sale spurred
comments to MySpace HQ. Many users mentioned their
disdain for News Corp.’s owner, Rupert Murdoch.
The 29-year-old Anderson told users that he would
remain on board and that he wouldn’t allow
their community to get “jacked up.”
