Dec. 6 performance

Singers with the North Lake College Chorale
rehearse “Music for a Winter’s Night.”
The North Lake College choir program is for anyone
interested in singing for a choir, but mainly
for music majors. It also offers scholarships
for students majoring in voice.
The program is divided into the North Lake College
Chorale and the North Lake College Singers. The
Chorale is made up of people from the Irving community.
Students are more likely to join the North Lake
College Singers.
The Singers are voice major students, as well
as students who are just interested in singing.
North Lake College Singers is actually a class,
not a club.
In this class, students are taught stylistic
practices, notation reading and the history of
music. The Singers perform traditional choral
literature, the same type of music performed in
high school. However, unlike high school choirs,
they do not perform in competitions.
“They are just here to learn it (singing),”
said Allan Andrews, founder of the program and
NLC choir director.
Daniel Farrer is enrolled in the class. He is
majoring in music education and sang for his high
school choir. According to Farrer, being in this
class requires hard work. Students in this class
sing in eight different languages. They include
English, Italian, Spanish, French, Latin, German,
Maori and Chinese.
Farrer said, “Think about taking eight
different languages in one semester. If you like
music, love to sing, love hard work — it’s
a great class.”
Roger Jordan is another member of the North Lake
College Singers. He has been singing for four
semesters at North Lake and is majoring in musicology.
According to Jordan, being in a singing class
requires details such as getting the right vowels
and pitch, as well as teamwork. “You have
to rely on other people to get it correct,”
he said.
North Lake College Singers will perform Dec.
1 in the cafeteria for Student Recognition Day.
Then the choir will perform a concert Dec. 6 in
the Performance Hall entitled “Music for
a Winter’s Night.”
