Annual fundraising event open to clubs this year
Break out the pots, pans, spices, meats and other secret ingredients. It’s time to enter your chili in the Journalism Club’s fifth annual chili cookoff.
This spicy event will take place in front of the bookstore on March 6, from noon to 1 p.m. Tables will be available for you to set up for the competition at 10 a.m. The Journalism Club will also be providing the tables, electrical outlets, water, spoons, cups and napkins.
Judges are Joe Bishop, Len Kubicek and Kent Reppond.
“I enjoyed the variety at last year’s event,” said student Lisa Boone-Arellano. “You had all these different favors, you had your spicy chili, sweet chili — even vegetarian chili, you just had all these just different tastes. It’s also an opportunity to meet new people and learn the stories behind their recipes, many of them handed down from generation to generation.”
Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third places. The first place winner can choose one prize from the following: four tickets to Disney on Ice, four tickets to Entertainment Series of Irving (see ad on page 4), and a 5-day meal deal from North Lake’s campus Subway.
Other prize categories to be awarded are the People’s Choice Award, Best Decorated Table and Most Spirited participant.
A cup of chili will cost one ticket which equals fifty cents. The tickets are collected by the participants and they will trade them in for cash at the end of the event.
“Clubs are welcome to participate and use this event as a fundraiser,” said Amanda Witt, editor of the News-Register.
Raul “Rudy” Sanchez, Jr. will be back again this year with his award-winning “Rudy’s Hot Stuff Chili.” “I’m bringing a larger pot this year,” said Sanchez. “Last year I ran out of chili before I ran out of customers.”
Judging begins at noon. Deadline to enter is Friday, March 3, at 5 p.m. To compete in this event, contact Journalism Club Advisor Kathleen Stockmier via e-mail at kstockmier@dcccd.edu, or call the News-Register at 972-273-3498. |
