Advising Center gives Career Pathways boost

Need help with your career goals? Three new staff members added to assist students

jor in but are not sure how to get there? The Advising Office has added three additional staff to help students identify and strengthen teacher preparation goals, open pathways to health careers and improve transfer services to four-year universities.

Future teachers at North Lake College now have a resource to help them achieve their goal of becoming teachers: the Teacher Academy. The Teacher Academy is committed to provide support for prospective and current North Lake students who want to become elementary, middle school or high school teachers.

Mary Johnson, senior academic advisor and coordinator of the Teacher Academy, provides advising and financial aid opportunities to students majoring in education and assists in the transfer process to a four-year university.

Jarlene DeCay, the coordinator of health and medical careers, is providing educational planning and advising for students who want to explore options for careers in the health fields. There is a shortage of trained health care professionals in Texas, which means there are a growing number of health career opportunities. However, many students are not aware of the professional training needed to gain rewarding employment in health fields. We want students at North Lake College to be aware of the variety of exciting careers in health fields so they may be able to make an informed career decision, and Jarlene can help.

MaryAnn McGuirk, coordinator of transfer services, has been added to the advising staff to assist students with the overall transfer process. Many students wonder which classes they still need to take to obtain an associates degree, or when it is best for them to transfer to a university and begin working on their bachelor’s degree.

Students having these types of questions about transferring would benefit from a visit with MaryAnn.

For more information on the Teachers Academy, students should e-mail Mary Johnson, mjohnson@dcccd.edu. Students interested in opportunities within the health care fields should e-mail Jarlene DeCay, jdecay@dcccd.edu.

Assistance with the transfer process to a four-year university or questions about which of your courses will transfer, should contact MaryAnn McGuirk, mmcguirk@dcccd.edu. Students can also visit the Advising Office in Room A-415 to learn more about the benefits of working with an advisor to explore transfer opportunities as well as to receive assistance with the registration process.
