Month-long tribute to Black History celebrates community, family and the late Rosa Parks

North Lake College and the DCCCD have held African-American read-ins for the past 7 years. The purpose of the Read-In is to celebrate Black heritage and history through literature and to encourage participants and others to discover the joy of reading.

In honor of African-American Month, the Student Support Services/TRiO Program choose to spotlight the 9th and 10th Cavalry military units known as the Buffalo Soldiers. The program documented their presence in early Texas history to their presence in Iraq today.

No longer segregated, the 10th Cavalry is still wearing the name Buffalo Soldiers. Mr. Sweat, a living historian of the Buffalo Soldiers, came in 1870s period dress with a table full of information. His discussion with MJ Porchia during the Read-In was very enlightening. The proud heritage of the Buffalo Soldiers was brought to the African-American Read-In through a re-enactment by Mr. Sweat, father of Jessica Sweat, an alumna of NLC and the TRiO program.
