‘Potpourri’ theme characterizes the many talents coming
to campus
Writers’ Fest returns March 28 and 29, giving aspiring writers
at North Lake a chance to rub elbows and chat about writing with accomplished
authors. Professor Nancy Castilla hopes that the event will inspire and
encourage students with varying interests.
“I thought last year’s event was excellent,” Castilla
said. “I have read several pieces of work from the authors who
are coming in this year, and they are exceptional.”
This year’s theme is Writer’s Potpourri, referring to the
variety of expertise that will be available in different areas.
The event will kick off Wednesday, March 28, at 11:15 a.m. Dr. Jerry
Craven and his wife Sherry Craven will be the guest speakers. Dr. Craven
is a professor at West Texas State University and a member of the Texas
Institute of Letters. He is an editor and a published poet. Mrs. Craven
is a retired professor who has published poetry in English and Spanish.
That evening at 7:15, Jim Donovan and Richard Abshire will showcase some
different skills. Donovan is a literary agent based in Dallas.
Abshire
is part of the creative writing program at North Lake, who also works
for The Dallas Morning News. He has written more than five novels, and
will teach young writers some of the most important keys in that area.
He is also a former Dallas S.W.A.T. team captain.
“When he writes a detective mystery, he really knows what he is
talking about,” Castilla said.
Thursday, Greg Garrett will share his wisdom about writing and music.
Garrett is a professor at Baylor University, and enjoys mixing in a musical
element by playing his guitar. He has published more than 40 short stories
and two novels that he will discuss at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m.
All events are scheduled to take place in the North Lake Library. For
more information, contact Castilla at 972-273-3413, or visit her office
in room A-246.
