Dr. “Jess” Carreon’s leadership subject of public speculation

Chancellor Jesus “Jess” Carreon faces at least one significant challenge as his third year at the helm of the Dallas County Community College District comes to a close.

The District’s Board of Trustees unanimously approved Carreon’s hiring in June 2003. But, as June 2006 approaches, Carreon’s future with DCCCD has become a matter of public speculation.

As reported in the News-Register on Feb. 27 and the Dallas Morning News on April 5, a number of faculty members cite Carreon’s management style as a point of contention.

District spokesperson Ann Hatch said the Board of Trustees called an executive session meeting on April 18, at which personnel and real estate issues, including an evaluation of Carreon, could have been deliberated if so desired.

At the Board’s March 7 meeting, a group of supporters spoke in favor of retaining Carreon as DCCCD chancellor. However, no discussion of the topic was listed on the meeting’s agenda. The citizens’ comments were recorded. No action was taken.

At press time, no agenda was available for the Board’s next public meeting, to be held at 4 p.m. on May 2 at 701 Elm St. in Dallas.
