Sherry Boyd named President’s Scholar
North Lake College President Linda Glasscock announced earlier this month that Humanities instructor Sherry Boyd has been selected as the 2006-2007 President’s Scholar.

“Sherry’s winning proposal was selected from a dynamic field of outstanding scholarly efforts,” said Glasscock. “I greatly appreciate the high quality of the proposals that came from faculty. The committee had a very difficult task.”

Boyd’s proposal, “Virgins, Vixens, Victims and Vanquishers: Women in the Movies,” is a look at how the entertainment industry has characterized women in the last century, and how these stereotypes set unrealistic standards for women. At the college’s May 11 Blazer Bash Recognition Day program, Boyd will be the keynote speaker.

His visit is sponsored by the NLC Academic Advising Department’s Title V Grant. To learn more about Bowman before his “arrival,” visit his Web site at www.danabowman.com.

SPAR adds new program specialist
Delaina AlaniDelaina Alani is the new Student Program and Resource (SPAR) specialist at North Lake.

She is in her fourth week with the staff, although she is no stranger to building teamwork.  Her resume includes Tarrant County College (TCC), where she worked in higher education in 1990 on a work-study program for the faculty association. While at TCC, she was an instructional assistant with Student Development and Education Services (SDES).

Her plans for SPAR, an office dedicated to all students’ intellectual and personal development  and growth, include moving towards a mentor program for students. She wants to submit and propose a series of student wellness seminars that will facilitate campus retention and open the doors of SPAR to more underprepared students coming to college for the first time.

Other SPAR staffers include Drena! Settles, who is in charge of acquiring guest speakers for the college campus, and assists in budgeting costs for the programs. Drena! works alongside Sandi Rowe in supporting the budgeting for field trips for clubs and taking care of paperwork for out-of-town business trips.

William Videtto is full-time  student service assistant who facilities the programs SPAR offers, and Dawn Lassiter is a part-timer who does public relations work. She’s in charge of the banners and signage you see hanging in the halls.

The team works together to benefit the campus efficiently, so stop by room A-223 to pick up a brochure on their programs. (Taryn Rinker)
