Kite flying a big hit at Charter Day celebration
March 30, North Lake College celebrated its 29th birthday. Students, faculty and staff joined in the festivities as Student Programs and Resources (SPAR) hosted Charter Day with fun and free things for all.
SPAR hired a vendor from Grand Rapids, Mich. “They called at the right time as I was putting together the event for Charter Day,” said Drena Settles, SPAR program specialist. SPAR hired the vendor to take students’ pictures to place free on either a mouse pad or a T-shirt.
“It was a great idea for SPAR to come up with; something new and different this year, giving away free mouse pads and T-shirts,” said Bridget Talley, vice president of WEOTA Art Club.
“In 1977, NLC celebrated its first birthday,” said Settles. “SPAR wanted to celebrate its 29th birthday in a different way. Last year in 2005 we combined these two events together, Environmental and Charter days. This year we scheduled them apart to make each one special and yet keep it simple,” said Settles.
“It’s a great to have a party to celebrate NLC’s birthday with all the folks here. We would not be celebrating if it was not for all the students, faculty and staff,” she said.
North Lake’s party came with all the birthday fixings: two large cakes wishing a happy 29th birthday to NLC, tables adorned with balloons with volunteers serving refreshments and hot buttered popcorn.
SPAR also had 50 kites to give away free. Outside, it looked as if the wind would not allow any kite flying that day. But a couple of students took their chances. Up, up and away went the first kite into the tree and the next attempt went up, up, up and gone. However, the students said they had a great time trying.
“It was a great party,” said one of the students. |

Windy days are usually the best for kites, but on March 30, it was unbelievably windy. Students made the best of it.
