Police Beat:

Always be aware of your surroundings

Two weeks ago one of our female students was verbally accosted in the parking lot by a young male she did not know. According to the student, she opened her car door to walk to class when the student approached her. She was taken completely off guard.

When she realized that he was harassing her, she told him to leave her alone, but he continued to follow her into the building, shouting insults along the way. The female student did not realize she could call 911 and get a North Lake Police officer. She told her boyfriend and he advised her to tell the police.  They went looking for him.

At the end of the day, her boyfriend walked her to her car, and the perpetrator was waiting for her. He shouted insults at both the girl and her boyfriend, and the police were alerted again. According to the boyfriend, the police got a good look at the guy.

We checked with the NLC Police Department about its next self-defense program. Carla Dearman, the department’s assistant, is a certified Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) instructor, and she is working with Officer Gabriel Valdez at Mountain View College to conduct a 2-day, 12-hour RAD  self-defense course in May for students and faculty. Look for flyers.
