Tip leads police to speedy capture

North Lake College police confirmed that a suspect has been arrested in connection with two car burglaries on campus.

According to the department’s monthly crime report, North Lake police received a call on June 7 at 1:40 p.m. from a student who had witnessed an attempted burglary.

Octavio Aguirre, a corporal with the NLC police, said the student saw a young white or Hispanic male breaking into a truck.  He was wearing a baseball cap and a white or light colored shirt and was taking a stereo and speakers.

“We asked him, ‘How long ago was this?’” said Aguirre. “He said, ‘Right now,’ so we went out there to find him.”  By the time the officers got to the parking lot, the suspect was gone.

The student who witnessed the burglary also gave a description of the suspect’s car, a silver Ford F-150 with Texas license plates and a missing the front bumper.  Aguirre and the other NLC officers sent a dispatch to the Irving Police Department to be on the lookout for the vehicle.

“An Irving officer already had the vehicle in sight,” said Aguirre.  The suspect was a few miles from the North Lake campus on Cottonwood Valley Drive.

The suspect was in possession of the items stolen from the truck on the North Lake campus, as well as other items that had been previously reported stolen by the Southlake Police Department, according to Aguirre.

Anthony Kay, the assistant chief of police at North Lake, said that teamwork and quick action helped catch the suspect and retrieve the stolen items.

In an e-mail to North Lake faculty and staff, Kay stated, “Our student who chose to get involved, our police officers working together to apprehend the suspect and your NLC Police Department working in cooperation with the Irving Police Department to locate and apprehend the suspect brought a swift resolution to the incident.”

The suspect was handed over to the Southlake police where he was charged with Felony Theft, according to Aguirre.  Felony Theft is applicable when the amount of the stolen items are worth more than $1500.

According to Kay, it is important to contact the North Lake Police Department whenever they see something suspicious.  “If you see something that does not look right, please contact us immediately.”

The police office is located in C-204 and can be reached by dialing 9-1-1.  Meanwhile, for your own personal safety and the safety of others, the police recommend keeping any items of value in a safe, secure place or to carry them with you.
