Learning Communities bridge areas of study
A dynamic learning experience comes to North Lake College this fall.
The new class schedule features several Learning Communities designed to
help students make logical leaps from one subject to another and participate
in unique assignments.
A Learning Community is a group of linked courses with common
themes, content and material. They are taught together and students
participate in innovative assignments and activities.
Learning Community courses intensify and spotlight critical thinking.
Students experience connections between subjects and develop unique
skills. Six or more credits are offered for each Learning Community class.
When students register for one of the linked courses, registration for the
other course(s) will be automatic. Learning Community offerings include:
• Animated Algebra Learning Community
• Cultural Communications
• Psychology of Politics
• Reading and Math Intersected
Students looking for more information can find it online or in the fall
schedule; They can also visit the Welcome Center at NLC's Central Campus.

Natatorium lifeguards compete in local games
The North Lake Gnats, a team of NLC employees, participated in The
North Texas Guard Games, a competition for lifeguards.
The Gnats placed eighth in a field of 23 teams, according to Gnat
spokesperson Angela Streck, interim natatorium supervisor.
“Even though our team was a little wet behind the ears, we showed we
weren't to be underestimated,” said Streck. “With hard practice and a little
luck we will take first place next year.”
The City of Irving will host the Tenth Annual North Texas Guard Games
next year. It's not too early to start cheering on NLC's Gnats: Jaclyn Carpenter,
Johnny Jenkins, Ronal Rivera, Kandace Tulk and Branden Behler. NLC's
Christine Atteberry and BJ Borougerdiparticipated on the City of Irving's
team and Streck cites herself, Walter Ritchie and a committee of peers who
helped the guards prepare for competition.

Lassiter addresses 'Higher Ed' attendees
DCCCD Chancellor Dr. Wright Lassiter made a presentation on Aug. 17
in Dallas at “Higher Ed, Higher Tech '06,” a conference sponsored by BKM
Total Office. Lassiter's speech, “The Changing Face of Higher Education,”
was part of a day-long series that explored trends in higher education and
their implications on architecture, furniture and technology. BKM is an
approved vendor on DCCCD's procurement list.
BKM Total Office funds scholarship
On July 28, BKM Total Office of Texas funded a scholarship in the
name of Dr. Wright Lassiter. The recipient, Tony L. Coats II, was announced
on Aug. 17. The scholarship, which bears both the company's and
Lassiter's names, is administered by the DCCCD Foundation. BKM is one
of the District's furniture vendors.
“We are pleased to honor Dr. Lassiter with this scholarship gift, which enables
us to help DCCCD students and also to recognize the chancellor's integrity
and leadership in higher education,” said Carol Roehrig, BKM's president. |
