NLC: A giving community

This month we're reminded
of what can happen
when tragedy strikes a
nation, like it did on 9/11.
It's been fi ve years and many of
us can say exactly where we were,
and what we were doing and who
was with us when the towers were
struck down.
On a personal level, towers in
people's lives can be struck down
at any given moment and without
warning. How do we react to crises
in people's lives around us?
Through the Santa Bucks program
students and faculty can be a part of
the solution.
The Santa Bucks program was
born in 2002 out of the desire to
help people. Clothing and food
are made available to anyone who
needs them. If we can't help you,
we'll try to fi nd someone who can.
Through the generosity of the
NLC family, donations are abundant.
Clothing has been placed
where it is appreciated, food is distributed
to happy campers, and bus
passes are getting students to classes
because NLC cares!
Everywhere I turn I meet students
and faculty with such willingness
to roll up their sleeves and do
the deed, whatever it may be. Thank
you so much for all of the support
you have given to the effort. The
staff of the News-Register and the
Journalism Club have learned that
what we take from the community
in the form of news, we should give
back in areas where it is needed.
Santa Bucks meets the increasing
need of the student body at Christmastime,
but because those needs
are year-long we'll soon be introducing
the Blazer Bucks program.
Also, the month of September is
Spanish Heritage Month from Sept.
15 - Oct. 15. I had the awesome opportunity
to meet Rene Castilla the
executive dean of educational partnerships.
“This month is to celebrate who
we are and to remember what contributions
our community has made
to the state and the nation,” he said.
“We don't celebrate Spanish Heritage
Month to show allegiance to a
foreign sovereignty/ We celebrate
with the community to show ourselves
as Hispanics and that we're
a part of what makes this country
great.”
