The Student Government Association swore in its newly elected officers on Oct. 4. The ceremony, which had been delayed due to electronic voting error, was held in the Gallery and was attended by many administrators and faculty, including President Herlinda Glasscock.

“You help us keep our finger on the pulse of what happens on campus,” Glasscock said during her address to the officers.

“In addition to gaining experience in leadership and insight into serving, these students also serve as a conduit of feedback to the administrators about students and their issues,” she said at the reception immediately following the ceremony.

Dr. Gabriel Bach, the faculty advisor to the SGA, charged the students to work together. “I hope you work as a team and have time to spend in an intelligent way,” he said.

Sibongile Mlambo, who was elected president of the student body, said that service is the most important part of her new position. “It means being able to serve students and performing the position to the best of my ability,” she said.

Justen Baptiste was elected vicepresident and said that he already has some important issues in mind to address, including the creation of a more advanced system of public transportation to and from the college. Helping to create such programs is what Baptiste believes his job is all about.

“It means everything. I get to represent the student body and speak on their behalf,” he said.

Michelle Clark, who was elected as historian, said that she was proud to have been chosen. “It's an extreme honor to have the student body's confidence to be elected,” she said. Clark, who is half Punjabi, wants to focus on the needs of international students.

Sarah King, incoming treasurer, said that it made sense for her to run. “I'm going to be here for a little while and while I'm here I want to try to help.”

King hopes to keep a tighter reign on the budget. “I want to get the most out the money for our students,” she said.

Incoming Parliamentarian Byron K. Williams, Jr. and Secretary Muyassar “MiMi” El-Khalili both commented on the honor and responsibilities of holding office. “I'm ecstatic,” said El-Khalili. “It's the first time I've had this much responsibility and I'm willing to take that on.”

Williams agreed. “This gives me the chance to support students but to make sure officials are serving us fairly.

The SGA officers serve a term of one year, which ends after the summer semester of 2007, according to SPAR officials.
