Forensics teams earns awards
The North Lake College Forensics team competed last month in the Tarrant County Community College North East Novice Newbie Tournament 2006.

The team captains were Adam Villarreal and Chris Ward. Casey Karnes took second place in Impromptu Speaking. Adam Villarreal took third place in Persuasive Speaking and fifth place in After Dinner Speaking. Chris Ward won seventh place in Impromptu Speaking. The team prepared under the direction of Sonya Hopkins Barnes.


Poet gets top billing at SPAR Amateur Night
“Welcome to ... Gaston Avenue,” a poem presented by NLC student, artist and writer Carey Polk, took top prize at SPAR's Nov. 8 Amateur Night in the cafeteria.

Freshman Paris Williams took second place with her song, “I Just Can't Give Up Now.” Michelle Clark won third place for her song, “Angel.”

Justen Baptiste served as the emcee. Judges were Shahana Yesmir, Hana Vo and Oscar Roman.


More smart classrooms on their way
With the arrival of 14 new custom cabinets, North Lake now has more smart rooms available for students and faculty. Jeff Williams, educational and administrative technology, said the remaining cabinets should arrive in time to have more smart rooms ready for the spring semester.


Students win 17 journalism awards
The Texas Community College Journalism Association gave 17 awards to the school's literary magazine, CCWriter, and North Lake's campus newspaper, the News-Register.

In the literary magazine category, CCWriter won eight awards, including sweepstakes. The magazine's content is written by creative writing students, and the magazine is designed by journalism students using art and photography elements from North Lake students.

Art faculty gets local attention
Instructor Chris Fulmer was the subject of a “Profiles” series last month on Irving Community Television Network (ICTN.)

Fulmer was interviewed about her connections to New Mexico and stories of Georgia O'Keefe as well as her own career. Fulmer and art instructors Leisa Corbett and Bob Nunn, were featured at the DallasArtsRevue exhibit in Oak Cliff on Oct. 28.
