Ludwig talks about
goalie controversy
Turco or Smith? Hockey analyst has
his say about the Stars’ players to learn from failures
Ok, guys, I am back after
almost two months
away doing very important
reporter stuff.
Mostly chatting online and watching
ESPN and keeping up with all
of the sports stories. I have been doing
some work. I have been covering
our fi rst place basketball team
and watching the baseball team
get ready for their season to start. I
met CBS 11 sports anchor
Babe Laufenberg.
I also tried to get an
interview with Dallas
Cowboys quarterback,
one Mr. Tony Romo.
But his publicist hasn't
called me back to set
up a phone interview…
yet. I did get a chance to
talk hockey with former
Dallas Stars player, two-time Stanley
Cup champion and current hockey
analyst for Fox Sports Southwest,
Craig Ludwig. The major topic was
the goalie controversy that is facing
the Stars right now.
The Stars' starting goaltender,
Marty Turco, hasn't looked his
best in the last few weeks, getting
pulled from the net in two consecutive
starts. Backup net minder Mike
Smith has made some starts and
has come on looking strong, defeating
the Anaheim Ducks 1-0 a few
weeks ago. Smith has looked very
good in the net making some great
saves and keeping his team in the
game. Now I know what you are
thinking: “What happened against
the Redwings on Valentine's Day?”
Well, as Ludwig put it, “the game
ended the way it should have. Mike
Smith was the best player in a Dallas
Stars uniform.” Admit it, guys,
Detroit is and was
the better team. I feel
dirty now. Luds also
threw out this stat to
me, “The Dallas Stars
had 25 blocked shots
and Detroit had nine.”
That means that 25
shots were blocked and
Smith never even made
a save. The Stars were
also outshot 32-18.
Let's give Marty some credit;
there was a span of about 22 games
where Smith was injured so Turco
had to play and it does take a toll
after awhile. We were all witnesses
to the quarterback controversy the
Cowboys had this season that put
Romo as starter instead of Bledsoe.
This goalie controversy needs more
time to play out.
