President Glasscock receives library award
Dr. Herlinda Martinez Glasscock, president of North Lake College, is
the recipient of the 2007 Administrative Leadership Award sponsored by
the National Council for Learning Resources/Library Programs.
The award will be presented at the annual conference of the American
Association of Community Colleges (AACC)
in Tampa, Fla., April 14-17. The recognition
includes a commemorative item and a $500
scholarship for North Lake College, which will
be presented at the NCLR meeting during the
AACC conference.
“Thanks to Dr. Glassscock for her support,
dedication, and determination, exemplified
through her commitment of funds, which has
allowed the procurement of the materials needed
to rebuild the collection, our library is returning
to the former premiere facility it was prior to the partnership,” said Dr.
Linda Long, speech professor, in her letter supporting the nomination of
Glasscock.
Graduation is just around the corner
Have you filed all the necessary paperwork to graduate? If not, see Ellen
Brown in Admissions.
Graduation will be held Thursday, May 10, at 7 p.m. A reception will
follow in the gymnasium.
Electronic Press features student’s work
Former North Lake student Liese Sherwood-Fabre released her latest work, Debate with a
Vampire, on March 16 through The Wild Rose
Press Web site, www.thewildrosepress.com.
Sherwood-Fabre was active in North Lake’s
Creative Writing program with Dr. Gary Swaim,
Dr. Nancy Castilla and Richard Abshire.
Her story about one woman’s encounter with a
vampire during a visit to Dracula’s castle is the
latest Black Rosette offered by the electonic
publishing house.
Dance Team tryouts scheduled for April 14
Auditions for North Lake’s Dance Team and Reperatory Dance
Company will take place on April 14 at 10 a.m. in F-105.
No dancing experience is necessary. Proper attire is strongly enforced.
Black jazz pants, any color tank top, and your desire of dance shoes must
be worn to auditions.
You must be able to enroll in Dance 1212-7002 and rehearse Monday and
Wednesday from 11:05 a.m. to 12 p.m. It is a two-semester commitment.

Teacher Prep Club holding school supply drive
The Teacher Prep Club, dedicated to preparing education majors for
the responsibility of teaching, and mentoring children, has started a school
supply drive to assist recover schools in New Orleans. Those wishing to
contribute may drop off donations in the available bins at the SPAR office
or at the Student Advising Office.
The teacher prep club meets every first and third Thursday from 2 p.m.-
3 p.m., in room A-420, and are always looking for and accepting new
members. If the dates or times confl ict with your class schedule, contact
Janell Edwards in the Student Advising Office.
The club has several special fundraisers and activities coming up this
spring semester, so watch for signs and printed notifications of upcoming
events in the halls.
TRiO has positive impact in communities
On Feb. 24, the TRiO programs in the Dallas and Fort Worth
Alliance celebrated National TRiO Day in collaboration with the
Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad Company Technology Day, and
North Lake’s Upward Bound/TRiO program was among them.
Federal TRiO Programs help low-income and first-generation
students enter college and earn a college degree. Th e DFW Alliance
serves 2,000 students.
TRiO services include: assistance in choosing a college; tutoring;
personal and financial counseling; career counseling; assistance in
applying to college; workplace and college visits; special instruction in
reading, writing, study skills, and mathematics; assistance in applying
for financial aid; academic assistance in high school or assistance to reenter
high school.
Campus Conversations schedule
Several members of the President’s Team will meet one-on-one with
students, faculty and staff in front of the cafeteria in April.
President Linda Glasscock will be available for conversation on April
4 at 2:30 p.m. Paul Kelemen, vice president for community & economic
development, is scheduled for April 12 at 10 a.m.
Candace Castillo, vice president of planning & development, will be
available at 2:30 p.m. on April 18, and Rene Castilla, executive dean of
educational partnerships, will talk at 10 a.m. on April 26.
March 24 concert honors women
A recital in honor of Women’s History Month was held March 24 in
the Performance Hall.
Presented by the Visual & Performing Arts Teaching & Learning
Center, the performance featured soprano Regina Walter, assisted by
pianist Elena Tsvetkova. The program featured both piano and vocal works
by Maria Szymanowska, Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, Clara Schumann,
Pauline Viardot-Garcia, Katherine Davis and others. |
