Students clean up
on Earth Day
Free food, free entertainment and free
advice on recycling on day’s agenda

Live music rocked the
Courtyard April 19 as
North Lake students observed
Earth Day and
participated in Rock the Green recycling
activities.
Free food provided by SPAR was
another magnet that drew people to big
bins ready to transfer trash toward new
products. Students, faculty and staff
dined on hamburgers, chips and beans
served on bio-degradable plates.
“Rock the Green was aimed towards
students to get more (of them)
involved in recycling,” said Vicki Riley
of Phi Theta Kappa, one of the
event’s campus sponsors. She said the
campus effort is part of Irving’s Great
American Clean Up, which runs each
year from March 1 until May 31.
Corporate sponsors included
Nokia, Sam’s Club and Siemens
Networks.
But Keep Irving Beautiful sponsored
the attention-drawing entertainment
– live performances by
Fishing for Comets, Vocal Trash
and North Lake’s jazz band.
Vocal Trash played instruments
fashioned from metal trash cans.
The jazz band covered plenty of
favorites.
And Fishing for Comets drew
lots of fans and donated $3 to the
Asian Heritage Scholarship Fund
from each CD sold on campus.
Through Phi Theta Kappa, some of
those discs remain available for the
price of $10.
Along with recycling plastic and
paper, e-recycling was encouraged
throughout the day.
Many people are unaware of
e-recycling, some event organizers
said. But it’s available for outdated
computer parts, worn-out
cell phones, and most old equipment
that utilizes memory chips. In
short, e-recycling can help the planet
grow greener, they said. |
