2007

Clear skies and 70 degrees
greeted 28,242
EdgeFest fans April
15 at Pizza Hut Park in
Frisco. It was perfect weather for
listening to more than 25 bands
pound their drums, tickle their
keyboards and strum their strings.
“Pull up some concrete and
enjoy the show,” bellowed Jon
Whitlock from a stage where he
fronted for The Barons. They’re
a group of former Irving residents
who parlayed a Music Nation
contest, Internet popularity
and some ink in recent issues of
the News-Register and Business
Week into their first EdgeFest appearance.
But promoter FM 102.1 The
Edge brought many acts to the
red seats and green fields of Frisco’s
new soccer and entertainment
complex.
Fans were crowd-surfing in
front of Say Anything.
Papa Roach attracted a huge
audience.
Girls in bikini tops made their
way to Blue October, Muse, The
Killers. Guys peeled their shirts
and followed them.
After a few hours of that perfectly
sunny day, some folks realized
that sun block would have
been a prudent investment. But
leaving the site wasn’t an option
for fans who paid $15 for parking
and about $50 per ticket. Security
teams informed all that no one
could return once they left the
music behind.
But it was a good crowd – no
fights, no beer puke to avoid.
Occasionally, a slight breeze
would distribute pot’s pungent
perfume past people who had no
interest in its pursuit.
And then there was the music
of My Chemical Romance and
more than a dozen other acts.
Before the end of the day,
though, at least one fan, Anna
Schumacher, said she favored
those boys in The Barons.
“They sounded amazing and
new,” she said |
