SGA president is Amidon/Beauchamp recipient

Sibongile Mlambo, current president of North Lake’s Student Government Association, is the 2007 Amidon/Beauchamp Memorial Award.

The award is based on campus and community involvement and is named after two DCCCD SPAR directors, David Amidon from Eastfield and Sharon Beauchamp from North Lake.

“Sibongile was most deserving of this award,” said SPAR Director Virginia Jones. “She is a dedicated student.”

Mlambo received the award last month at a banquet, which included Amidon’s and Beauchamp’s family members.

Dr. Romero appointed to board

History professor and Phi Theta Kappa advisor, Dr. Yolanda Romero, has been named to a Statewide Discipline-based Vertical Team – for Phase I, the development of Texas’ College Readiness Standards.

Romero is on one of four teams of 10 members each (24 from higher education and 16 from public education) who have been appointed.

The legislation that is the inspiration for the work of these teams – House Bill 1 from the 79th Texas Legislature, Special Called Session – provides for a number of activities for the Vertical Teams. Phase I for developing draft College Readiness Standards should be completed in September 2007.

Last fall, North Lake’s 2006 Rome Students wrote letters to Texas Senators showing their support for the Abraham Lincoln Study Abroad Act, which was introduced on July 26, 2006.

By the end of February, Marsha Anderson, the Rome Studies Abroad director, received a letter from Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson who was a co-author on the bill, which would establish scholarship funding for middle-class students. DCCCD, Parker College sign agreement

Dallas County Community College District students who are interested in health careers can add chiropractic to their list of options after officials from both DCCCD and Parker College of Chiropractic sign a transfer agreement that will create a seamless transition for students between the two institutions.

Transfers from DCCCD to Parker College will based on credit hours that students earn in the district, not from individual colleges within DCCCD, which is particularly important for individuals who are enrolled at more than one of the district’s institutions.

DCCCD, Langston University sign agreement

Officials with the Dallas County Community College District and Langston University (Okla.) have signed an agreement that enables DCCCD students to finish their associate’s degrees and then transfer seamlessly to Langston University to pursue their bachelor’s degrees – giving them yet another option to continue their careers in higher education. Langston is Oklahoma’s only historically black university.
