For the third year in a row, Phi Theta Kappa has won an award in the city’s Fourth of July parade. This year the national honor society members chose to decorate their fl oat with a water conservation theme, and they distributed information bags and candy to spectators.

For some of us, it has been an incredibly busy summer. For others, it has been an incredibly relaxing one. But whatever our free time has been in the past couple of months, it's about to change as we welcome a whole new school year.

Alpha Zeta Eta hasn't missed a beat and is looking forward to the busy year planned. This summer we were super active as we took on a tradition: the Fourth of July parade. To commemorate the annual event on the Fourth, our community unites in Irving's historical downtown to watch the annual parade filled with both commercial and non-commercial floats.

Alpha Zeta Eta has participated in the parade for five years now using every opportunity to reach out to the community, and the walking fl oat we constructed for the 2007 parade was no exception. Following a water conservation and litter prevention theme, we decided to build a fl oat triggering different aspects of the usage of water and the ways it's wasted more frequently. The float construction consisted of two raining clouds, trash, drains reading "Don't Be a Pain" and Feed the Drain," a shower costume, posters of toilets, toothpaste and toothbrushes, and watering plants, Lady Liberty, Uncle Sam, and Iron Eyes Cody.

On the actual day of the parade, there were 30 people walking, as well as three visiting colleges and three alumni associations from nearby areas. The float also distributed 1,000 information bags as well as 1,000 candy bags. Such an elaborate float paid off by winning Best Non-Commercial float, our third award in three consecutive years.

At the end of the parade, our Alpha Zeta Eta team conducted a survey with environmental questions to start preparing for our annual Trinity Trash Bash, where we will be cleaning up the most deteriorated areas in the city. Last year their turnout was more than 700 people, and this September the attendance is expected to rise. We also have started committees for our Pinwheels for Peace, which will be celebrated here on campus on Sept. 21st.

As for now, we are preparing for our fall induction, which we're hoping will include all the students available. For those interested, the requirements are 3.5 GPA2 or higher, at least 12 credit hours, and a one-time fee of $85.

We will be conducting several orientation meetings to address any questions anyone might have. Weekly meetings are Fridays at 4:30 p.m., in room A-206. Everyone is more than welcome to come. If you would like any extra information on any of their events, please contact Vicki Riley, president of the chapter, at vikkii@putershop.com.
