Women's physical defense courses planned

A free, two-day physical defense course will be held Sept. 15 & 16 and Oct. 20 & 21 in L-240 at North Lake College.

The "Women's Rape Aggression Defense" (RAD) will be conducted by certified instructor Carla Dearman. The basic defense program is physical, so comfortable workout attire is best. "No heels," said Dearman

. "This is an empowering course. Women don't think they can defend themselves, but they can," said Dearman. She added that their confidence is boosted when they see themselves on video. Topics include "What is rape?" and "How to reduce the risk of rape."

The weekend courses are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day, and are free for women (at least 17 years of age) students, faculty or staff. Ages 13 to 16 must have a signed release.

Classes are limited and open to the first twenty people. Call Dearman at 972-273-3302, or e-mail her at cdearman@dcccd.edu.

Hollis Fischer, a student of Shelly Woodcox- Unruh’s, has won the first place award in poetry at the National League for Innovation Literary Contest for his poem, “Moving House.”

Before going to the national competition, the poem took first place at the local level (North Lake) and at the district level, said Dr. Nancy Castilla, director of North Lake’s Creative Writing Program.

Fischer received a monetary award of $500, and his poem will appear in the publication featuring the winners of the national contest, and also on page 30 of the fall 2007 Duck Soup. It was the first time for North Lake to win a national award in the poetry.

Student wins Women in Film scholarship

Video technology student Sharie Vance received a $1500 scholarship by the Women in Film Foundation.

Vance, a mother of four and a grandmother of four, said the support and wisdom of instructor Andy Chiles and her boss Harriet Meyerson have been inspirational and taught her much.

“I’ve waited all my life to go to college and to learn how to put my passion to work,” said Vance. “I’m very grateful for the opportunities that I have been given to continue my education and pursue my dreams.”

Vance said the Video Technology program at North Lake is “awesome and very hands on.” She said many talented people have graduated from the program and gone on to do great things.

The Women in Film Foundation scholarship program is “dedicated to providing scholarships to female students based on their academic standing, artistic talents and commitment to a film-based curriculum.” Vance entered a video and wrote an essay.

She plans to use the scholarship money to help buy a computer to edit videos.
