In May 2004, Dallas taxpayers approved a $450 million bond package to finance sweeping upgrades in the DCCCD with five new education centers.
The bond issue was to fund the Master Facilities Development Plan, which is designed to meet an expected district-wide surge in enrollment over the next decade.
Initially, the plan was to include significant increases in parking and classrooms at North Lake, as well as the addition of a new learning center in northwest Dallas County, facilities for science and medical professions, workforce development and the visual and performing arts.
Today, only the North Campus in Coppell has broken ground. The building will include over 32,000 square feet of instructional space and student support services, and is scheduled to open its doors in fall 2008.
A new South Irving Center will be built on a 15.6-cre site at the southeast corner of Shady Grove Road and MacArthur Blvd., and will be renamed "South Campus Education Center." The approximate date of completion is spring 2009. The new campus will include 23 classrooms and other facilities spread across 50,000 square feet of floor space.
The college is expanding and now includes 571,000 square-feet of building space and more is on the way.
On North Lake's Central Campus, two buildings will be erected - the General Purpose Building and the Science and Medical Professions Building. Parking has been upgraded.
In addition, DART is planning to expand its light rail service between the Las Colinas Urban Center and DFW International Airport with a station at North Lake College, scheduled to be completed by 2010.
