Phi Theta Kappa wins big at convention
Honor society recognized for all four hallmarks in Philadelphia

The North Lake College chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the honor society for two-year colleges, was judged in the top 11 of the group’s 1,200 worldwide chapters at its 90th international convention in Philadelphia in April.

The convention annually recognizes those chapters that exemplify Phi Theta Kappa’s four hallmarks: scholarship, leadership, service and fellowship.

Alpha Zeta Eta, Phi Theta Kappa’s chapter at North Lake, wasn’t just recognized: It won every possible international award but one.

In addition to several individual awards, Alpha Zeta Eta claimed the Leadership and Service Hallmark awards and received the Beta Alpha Award for ranking among the top 25 chapters worldwide for three consecutive years. It was the second consecutive year for North Lake to receive that distinction.

At the international convention, the new biennial discussion and work topic was officially introduced: The Paradox of Affluence: Choices, Challenges, and Consequences. For the next two years, chapters around the world will explore this topic and work on related projects that encourage students to think ‘outside the box.’

To help with the development of such projects, several workshops were conducted, and the convention hosted keynote speakers – including CNN chief international correspondent Christiane Amanpour, former State Department spokesman James Rubin, syndicated columnist George Will and novelist Amy Tan.

Dr. Herlinda Glasscock, North Lake’s president, attended the convention and described Alpha Zeta Eta’s efforts to assist students during their two-year academic program, as well as help them transfer to four-year schools.

Alpha Zeta Eta is conducting elections to determine who will lead the chapter to the next international convention, scheduled for April 2009 at the Gaylord Texan Resort and Convention Center in Grapevine.

The new officers will attend a retreat May 16-18 to plan projects for the next year. If anyone is interested in joining and participating, please contact Vicki Riley at vikkii@putershop.com.
