Video Festival May 1
Projects on view at free event

North Lake’s state champion broadcast students and their Video Club are hosting their ninth annual Video Festival on May 1.

The Video Festival provides “an opportunity for students to show their work in the community,” said instructor and video technology coordinator Andy Chiles.

Showcasing music videos, documentaries, animations, short films, news and a variety of other media, the festival is strictly a student production.

North Lake students have entered their video-technology projects to expand their exposure throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Chiles said the festival helps them demonstrate the skills and knowledge they have acquired at North Lake and boosts their efforts to launch careers in video technology.

Chiles added it will be special fun for him to see what work is featured at the festival. Although he was part of the judging process – which consisted of a committee and video club officials – he didn’t judge all the video that will be shown.

Since its inauguration in 2000, North Lake’s Video Club remains the only one of its kind in the Dallas County Community College District.

While at the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association annual convention at College Station in April, North Lake’s broadcast students raked in numerous awards, including the association’s highest honor for best overall newscast. To capture that state championship, the North Lake team had to overcome competition from such four year schools as the University of Texas at Austin, Stephen F. Austin State University at Nacogdoches and Midwestern State University at Wichita Falls.

North Lake’s program shows promise for future directors, animators and broadcast journalists, Chiles said.

So North Lake students and staff may want to skip any high-dollar entertainment plans they have for May 1.

There is no admission fee for the Video Festival, which begins at 7 p.m., in Performance Hall.
