International Education Week

Explore the global scene with North Lake College as we celebrate our International Education Week! Our International Center has planned a variety of fun and informative activities, with a special focus on global political issues and differences between political systems in other parts of the world.

Monday, November 12
International table, outside the bookstore, 10:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
This kick-off event is a chance to meet the staff of the college's International Center.

Tuesday, November 13
Political forum, room H226, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
The centerpiece of the week's activities, this forum will feature guest speakers from around the world who now live the Dallas area. They will talk about their home nations' government and political systems, answering pre-written questions and then accepting more questions directly from the audience. Moderated by Dr. Gabriel Bach, the panel will end with an open conversation about international politics.

Wednesday, November 14
Film screening and discussion: We, room H226, 11:30 a.m.
We is a documentary about the current state of the world, as told through the words of award-winning author Arundhati Roy. Using one of her speeches as a narrative frame, We examines issues like the war on terror, corporatization, justice, and shifts in global culture. After the movie, there will be an open group conversation.

Thursday, November 15
Film screening and discussion: Raajneeti, room A206, 12:30 p.m.
One of the ten highest-grossing movies in Bollywood history, Raajneeti has parallels with both ancient Sanskrit legends and mafia films like The Godfather. The story focuses on a political dynasty of plotting, power-greedy family members who think nothing of fighting each other for office, and the rise and fall of an heir unwilling to participate in the family business. The Times of India called the movie "an engrossing diatribe on India's political system where democracy may prevail, but not in its purest form."
