A Marine's memoir of service is NLC's first Common Book
It Happened on the Way to War: A Marine's Path to Peace, a memoir by Rye Barcott, is the 2014-15 North Lake College Common Book. In this acclaimed memoir, Barcott recounts how he achieved his goals of military service and social sustainability, first as a college ROTC student and later as a community activist in Kenya and a Marine on active duty in Iraq. The charity Barcott co-founded, Carolina for Kibera, funds health clinics, medical aid, clean water, and trash collection in one of the largest and bleakest slums in the world. It is an unusual and unlikely that will inspire and will add richness to the curriculum across NLC.
Full-time and adjunct faculty who agree to include the Blazer Common Book in their courses for the 2014-15 school year will receive a free desk copy of It Happened on the Way to War to facilitate their planning.
Instructors: Now is the time to get involved! To commit to using the book in your classes, please contact the Common Book team or Pamela Ice. You can choose your own way to incorporate the book into classes, whether through structured lesson plans, extra credit assignments, or anything in between. Ideally, a student will be assigned the book in more than one class.
Students: Stay tuned for a schedule of events, activities, and discussion groups in fall 2014, including a visit from the author.

About the Common Book Project
The Common Book was chosen from over fifty books suggested by the North Lake College community in 2013. A common book creates a sense of community among students, faculty, and staff, through the reading and discussion of a single book.
