It was on a Saturday in October when North Lake College (North Lake) was formally dedicated in 1977. More than 600 people gathered around the flag poles in front of the college on that mild, overcast day to listen to speakers who competed with low flying planes headed for the nearby DFW airport.
It was the start of a new era in education for the citizens of Irving and the growing western portion of Dallas County. It was an era that would see the birth of the community college model for higher education and the beginning of the concept that a college education was within reach for everyone.
When North Lake opened, Dr. Bill Priest was Chancellor and R. L. Thornton was President of the Dallas County Community College District (DCCCD) Board of Trustees. North Lake College has come a long way from that dedication day in 1977.
