RecycleMania

RecycleMania is a friendly competition among colleges and universities in the United States that provides the campus community with a fun, proactive activity in waste reduction. Over a 10-week period, campuses compete in different contests to see which institution can collect the largest amount of recyclables per capita, the largest amount of total recyclables, the least amount of trash per capita or have the highest recycling rate.

The main goal of this event is to increase awareness of campus recycling and waste minimization. All participating schools are required to report measurements on a weekly basis in pounds. RecycleMania helps participating colleges and universities make achievements in recycling and waste reduction!

A winning history

North Lake College was the national winner of the RecycleMania 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011 Waste Minimization competitions. In 2015 and 2016, NLC reclaimed the title, earning its fifth and sixth national championships for Waste Minimization.

North Lake took second place in 2012 and 2013, and third place in 2014. Since NLC began competing in the RecycleMania tournament in 2008, we've won 6 of our 9 contests and third place was our lowest finish - ever. In 2015, a total of 142 colleges participated in the Waste Minimization category.

How can you help?

Three simple words: reduce, reuse, recycle! Be mindful in reducing waste by using less and by selecting sustainable products. Wood, metal and other products can be 'reclaimed' and used again. Many items you purchase can be cleaned and reused or repurposed. Materials such as glass, paper, aluminum and certain types of plastic can be recycled. Even the smallest effort adds up to a more sustainable college, community and planet.

Help care for our environment and engage in a little healthy competition at the same time. Start reducing your waste now to prepare for 2017's RecycleMania.
