Jerry McElveen grew up in Independence, La., among an extended, loving and somewhat eccentric family. Friends included many second- and third-generation Sicilian-Americans, and his first teaching job in Morgan City, La. (1961) Introduced him to the richness of Cajun culture.​​

1969, Jerry moved to Dallas continuing his teaching career first at El Centro College and then at Richland College. The highlight of his professional life was being honored with the DCCCD Excellence in Teaching Award, given to one outstanding professor from a faculty of more than 1500.

He has traveled extensively, including a sabbatical in Bangladesh, and he and his wife Sue, continue to enjoy the freedom of retirement journeys. He holds a B.A. in English from Southeastern Louisiana University and an M.A. in English from Louisiana State University.
