Getting started is easy!
Follow these steps:
- Ask your instructors if they offer credit for participating in
Service Learning. If Service Learning is not currently offered in one of
your courses, make an appointment with the SL office to bring your
class schedule and syllabi in so we can help you evaluate if there might
be an opportunity to integrate SL into one of your courses.
- IMPORTANT: Register as a Service Learning eCampus
user. Log on to eCampus, click on the Community tab, enter “nlc-s” in
the organization search box, then click with Katherine Villareal,
NLC-Service Learning. Make sure you provide eCampus with an email
address you check regularly.
- Choose your agency. Have another agency in mind in the event
that your first choice can not accept any more students or if their
schedule does not work with yours. If you choose an agency that's not on
the approved list, you must get it approved by the Service Learning
Office.
- Fill out the Service Learning
application forms: enrollment and release of liability. These forms are
located under the “Forms” tab on the Service Learning eCampus site, and must be submitted online. No paper applications will be accepted.
- Attend an orientation for your
agency and get started! You will receive all information for orientation
and your service times after you properly complete enrollment.
- Print the time sheet, which can be found on the SL eCampus
site. You will take this form with you every time you go to your agency.
Return your completed time sheet to the Service Learning Office by the
due date set for the semester.
- Complete your service hours and write your activity on the
time sheet. Keep a log of your experiences. You are required to complete
the number of hours set by your instructor or the agency you select if
they have a minimum standard.
Important: Be sure to complete any particular assignments relating
to your service learning experiences that might be required by your
instructor.
If you have any questions about how to choose an agency or the enrollment process, please contact the Service Learning Team.
Important: Since Service Learning is a
nationally recognized service organization, to receive credit and a
certificate of completion, you must meet all of the requirements of the SL program as laid out by the North Lake Service Learning Office.
Credit: Your instructor will determine how Service
Learning will be incorporated into your course grade. Be sure to
complete any particular assignments relating to your service learning
experiences that might be required by your instructor.
